Ketrzynski, Simac finish 12th at U21 Worlds

By Andrea Elliott

MANAMA, Bahrain - After 10 days of competition at the Men's Volleyball U21 World Championship, Ryerson's Xander Ketrzynski and Adam Simac are coming back to Canada with a 12th place finish.

Ketrzynski played a pivotal role in Canada's attacking offence, racking up 100 kills and eight service aces to go along with 14 blocks throughout the eight games in the tournament.

Team Canada was in a tough opening round pool, having to square off against the defending champions from Poland, as well as highly ranked Italy and Brazil, who would ultimately finish second and third, respectively. Canada lost all three opening round matches, but started to find their stride in the classification pool.

Canada strung together two straight wins with victories over Puerto Rico on July 22 and the Czech Republic on July 23rd to set themselves up well for the final stages. Ketrzynski played his two best games to that point in the wins, racking up 13 and 16 kills, respectively. A loss to Egypt on July 24th put them second in their classification pool, setting up a 9-12 qualifying game against Cuba.

Cuba got the best of Canada on July 26th, sending Canada to the 11th place game. There they met Poland for the second time in the competition, losing a narrow 3-2 decision to ultimately finish in 12th.

Ketrzynski had five straight games of 13 kills or more to end his tournament on a high note, personally.
